Unfortunately with sleeping systems it is always a case of you get what you pay for...you can never get the compact small size and light weight we all want with out paying a fortune for it......take it from me I have used a lot of is type of kit during my time in the Marines in Norway and lots of other nice snow bound and cold as hell places...UK is the coldest because of the wet air actually added to by wind chill factor so it feels colder than the minus temps elsewhere....... Exped kit is always good...usually developed from trials with military experts like Mountain Leaders etc....the companies give the kit out for them to trial and send feed back to them for development...

The thermarests are excellent the Dutch marines get them issued as standard and they use the best kit purchased direct of the shelf...

so what do you look out for in a thermarests, is it thickness or type of construction, i perfume the thicker ones pack bigger, do thy have any sort of coldness rating

Bill,,,its a nightmare,,,, you need to consider comfort,,size,,thickness,,,and the latest one i mentioned ,,the Trial pro ,,has excellent coldness rating,,,look it up on ebay,,,ive put item no up.... For you bill,,you will have more choice as you are not as heavy and fat as me,,,so you will get the comfort from a thinner mattress !!!!!,,,hence you will also get the small pack size !!!! I'm thinking about biting the bullet and getting the trial pro,,, never had a pro before LOL
