I can't speak about alzheimers, but my dad has terminal cancer and has said many times he wishes he would go to sleep and not wake up.  It's very sad because you want to do something to help and there is nothing you can do.  He has now started getting confused though, and that is very distressing.    However people care for anyone with alzheimers, and not end up losing it themselves I'll never know.

My wife and me looked after my mother in law for 10 years, really painful to watch her mind deteriorate slowly over the years, yes it was funny at times but not very often, I would only say to anyone who is in a similar situation to push for any help there is out there, we didn't get to know things until it was really too late and we missed out on so much things that could have been of help not just for ma in law but for us as well.
Good luck.
