A local council has banned just motorcycles using a road near the famous Ace Café in North London as part of a six-week trial following months of complaints about anti-social riding and racing on the road. Brent council has now banned motorcycles from Rainsford Road after a number of complaints about dangerous riding and large groups of bystanders. The ban has now been enforced after a series of Dispersal Orders which started in 2012 failed to address the issue with a hospital next to the road being caused problems with loud bikes on the road until late into the night. The British Motorcyclists Federation (BMF) had written to Brent Council voicing opposition to the plan but the alternative plan of spending £90,000 on traffic calming was not deemed affordable and the ban is now in place. The BMF’s Chris Hodder said: “The BMF will be resisting this and we are considering taking Brent Council to court to challenge this decision. There is no defence for the behaviour of the people riding on the roads like this but I am not sure they know there is a hospital along that road. Perhaps if they had known they wouldn’t have been riding like this. “Enforcement of the existing road rules would have punished those riding irresponsibly. This ban just punishes all of those on motorcycles which is not fair treatment.” A statement from Brent Council said: “Brent Council have received numerous complaints and evidence from staff regarding the dangerous activities of motorcyclists on Rainsford Road. These complaints relate not only to the safety of riders but for all other road users. There are also a number of residential estates situated in both Brent and Ealing, that are near to Rainsford Road which are greatly affected by the crowds of motorcyclists that gather there and then misuse the road.The Council would agree that a prohibition on motorcyclists could appear punitive but it is believed that in this case it is necessary to prevent a potential fatal accident and to prevent anti-social behaviour. The area where the prohibition would cover is very small and the alternative route is a small detour. I actually believe due to the above factors described the occurrence of a fatal accident is more a question of when it will happen and not if it will happen. If the current state of affairs is allowed to persist the Council believe that the area will continue to be plagued by anti-social behaviour. Furthermore due to the size of the groups that gather and the behaviour that is actively encouraged, It is inevitable that a motorcyclist will die or be seriously injured in the near future unless the prohibition is introduced and actively enforced.”                                                                                                                                                                               

  As I've said on MANY occasions in the past   It only takes 1    to spoil it for us all   In the face of such evidence of "anti-social" behaviour   It's a small wonder, that it's taken so long to bring such measures to bear

I find it odd that the local plod didn't just park up and wait. Easy tickets for them.

This sort of ban should be opposed. When similar incidents occur with boy racers and cars the powers that be don't ban all 4 wheeled vehicles. This is just the local council taking the easy way out rather than enforcing the law.

                                                                                                                                                                             

Infringement of Civil/Human rights? anyways,, there's a hospital waiting to receive any injured riders right there!! Its wat hospitals are for?   I was there a few months ago, no one stopped the guy in the Trabant doing handbrake turns on the roundabout! As for the wheelies.....all in total control!   They got the Chelsea Cruise stopped a few years back, now its the turn of the Ace... Hey, what about those noisy wine bar places.....keeping folk up until after 11pm! Perhaps they all oughta close at 8pm?                                                                                                                                                                             

Aside from penalising the motorcyclists that use Rainsford Rd. the plan has virtually no basis in fact and little merit.
 It's a fairly straight road on one side bounded by the old Guinness Brewery site and Industry on the other.
Motorcyclists going to and from the Ace don't need to use it and only the locals would know it. The groups who use it as a drag strip will now simply take their unsociable activities elsewhere. 
Beresford Rd. is closer to the Ace and Abbey Rd. which runs past the hospital is a major route. No need to close the road to bikes....just put a high level Truvelo camera up at a strategic point and that would be job done.
