Robin Hood myth and legend, fact or fiction. It's up to you whether you want to believe in the romanticism and stories.

We may have read the story as a child, seen the TV series and of course, throughout the ages, watched all those Hollywood blockbusters movies.

What is generally known is that the legend of RH comes from numerous/various characters and stories throughout the ages, derived from different areas of the UK. Also from the 13th/14th century, the 15th/16th century and possibly later. All adapted to suit the fantasy of different generations.

Amongst the latter is the well known fact, that RH was of Nottingham legend, living in Sherwood forest, clashing with the Sheriff of Nottingham and occasional visiting the city and its castle.

Spurred on and inspired by a recent visit to Robin Hood's well (A1 near Doncaster) I now have my reservations about the Nottingham legend and it's claim.

For me he was far from the latter and we have not only been lied to, over the years, but I'm sorry people from Nottingham, he is not yours.

He derives from Barnsdale forest and the surrounding areas of Skelbrooke, Pontefract, Doncaster and Wakefield. Yes he was a Yorkshire man, he and his band of merry men. He was a Yeoman trained at Pontefract castle, along with Little John. After a misdemeanor with the crown, he became an outlaw, meeting little John, who was also a trained Yeoman and a tolls-man. There was no such person as the Sheriff of Nottingham, all crown accounts I believe we're Pontefract castle and not Nottingham castle. He married Marion at Campsall village church near Doncaster and Marion was not related to royalty. In fact this marriage in Campsall is where Fryar Tuck came into the story. He made sure that everybody had a right knees up by having there fair share of mead along with a bit of singing and dancing. As believed RH did not die at Kirklees abbey near Brighouse/Huddersfield. That grave structure is apparently from around the 18th/19th century.

So you have my view and you may have yours, which is a little different. Fact or fiction, myth and legend I truly believe that Robin of Hode was a true Yorkshireman?

No matter what age I am I learn something new every day. Very informative Mick, thanks for the history lesson.

I wonder how much of our history is as inaccurate as the tale of Robin Hood.

Steven McKay Wolfs Head books are a good bit of fiction about Robin Hood and he gives some good background info about Robin Hood at the back of his books
