Fines for not carrying a breathalyser kit in France have been postponed until March 2013.   The on-the-spot fines were originally due to be in force by November 1 this year.   Motorcyclists and drivers caught without a breathalyser kit will have to pay €11 (£8.90). Moped riders are exempt.   Motorists are expected to use the breathalysers to check that they are within France’s legal alcohol limit of 50mg per 100ml of blood, lower than the UK’s 80mg limit.   IAM director of policy and research Neil Greig said: “The new French rule is a genuine attempt to reduce the number of alcohol-related accidents. France’s lower limit means it’s very easy to be over the limit the morning after as well.”                                                                                                                                                                              

Its because they can't get enough of the kits to meet demand,I have friends who live there and they can't get hold of them out there as they've been sold out for months!

U can also buy them on the ferry over.
