Tried a new camera mount fixed to the engine crash bars. The vibration was too excessive to get anything useful. Anyone got a shock absorbing self levelling unit or know of one (similar to the steadi-cam unit for full pro cameras), or is it rubber washer time again?

You could try modifying an anglepoise lamp with stronger/weaker springs
A bit on the bulky/Heath Robinson side but functional
Works for a handheld camcorder
But rubber mounts can magnify vibration
Damping it is the solution
