Yeah like that really helps!

The correct name is horizontally opposed,     Thats right Yam, but not all horizontally opposed engines are Boxer engines.

Are only twins boxers then?

What would you call a twin crank opposed piston engine?

This is getting very techy now.

Julie I feel scorned, and you've brocken my emoticons.

No mate, any flat engine that has opposed cylinders that reach TDC at the same time, be it a twin, a four, a six etc.   Subaru Impreza for example is a boxer engine.

What about Deltic Engines?

Twin crank opposed pistons is a 1930s Junkers design. Now a three-crank design is a what? Used to see and hear quite a lot of 'em when I was a nipper.

Deltic, Thats not horizontally opposed mate .. it has three sides

Curse you Greasy Tony, you answered my question before I even posted it!

so one of the very few thing i know about my superdream engine is that it is unusual in that both pistons fire at once, is there a special name for this,is it a good or bad thing?

Thats different again Julie. It called 'wasted spark' ignition. Both cylinders fire at the same time but only one cylinder is on the combustion stroke. Isit a good or bad thing .. neither really, its done for simplicity & cheapness in production. Although any performance engine will have a 'single fire' sequential ignition system.

Napier built them for locos Delta as the cylinders form a triangle.

What about opposed pistons in a single cylinder with bell arms and a single crankshaft?

Did anyone build an horizontally opposed engine with common crank pins. I always tried to imagine what my old BMW boxer would have run like with a single crank pin. I bet it would be uncontrolable but a right laugh!

Yes, Alfa Romeo Alfa Sud.

Has someone erased my last post?

Thinking about it, a flat parallel twin with 180 deg crank would best describe a boxer wouldn't it?

A flat engine is an internal combustion engine with multiple pistons that all move in the horizontal plane. The most popular and significant layout has cylinders arranged in two banks on either side of a single crankshaft, generally known as "boxers". ...
