Question:

I'm always amazed by how many bikes some people have owned, suggesting they buy a bike and then flog it a few months later for something else lol!

And the number of bikes that some have owned in the "bikes you've owned" topic made me wonder how many miles people do on their bikes on average?

I've had six bikes over 125cc (pretty pitiful compared to many) and have done over 400k miles on those six bikes, suggesting an average of around 70k a piece.

So, how many miles do you normally put on your bike before selling it and why?

my 1977 zed 1000 had 110k on it when i sold it of which 45k in 2 yrs was mine - never went out of the british isles but just loved riding it...those were the days i rode in all weathers.   shame on me i now do about 5k per bike (two) per year. Purely for pleasure!

45k in two years ... that's pretty good KG.  I'm impressed.

about 12000 is usually my limit before boredom sets in and I need a new one. usually change as well because I find something better, though dont really know where I am going to go now - see what comes out over the next two years. Wink   Also dont like getting much over 12K on the italian sports bikes cause I like to get a reasonable price on the trade in.   Also a new (to me) bike every year is nice Big smile though I did miss out in 2010 due to circumstances

well, bit tricky! last 9 bikes i`ve had between 18 months and max 2 years, all ducati`s, least i did was 9000 on last multi 1100 as it kept being in dealers till i gave it back, the rest i`ve done 25-30,000 a year (hence why i change, so loose less on trade in)   guess since 19 i`ve done 500,000 ish miles (had 2 years abroad so no riding, and a few enforced breaks when in hospital)   heaven knows how much i`ve spent on tyres n servicing ? aaaaaagh (but considerably more than my house!)

I must admit after a few months of passing the basic test 2 years ago, I wanted to jump up to a bigger bike from my current ZX-6R. But friends (who have all got bigger bikes) say “fast enough isn’t it?” So I haven’t bothered selling.

I’m currently doing an average 7½ to 8k / year. And I thought that was a lot until I came across this topic!LOL

Ha ha ha .. that's pretty good actually Ronaldo.  I have come across bikes over ten years old with less than 5k on them!

I've only ever sold a couple of bikes on, I tend to rack up the mileage, leave them standing for a few years then virtually give away for breaking, daft really, I should sell when no longer needed and get a few quid back. Had one in the garden for past year now going same way.
