Own a o6 600cbf, put about 3 tanks of cheap e10 through it, everything fine, bikes never missed a beat, went on a trip today had a missfire right from the start that wouldn’t clear, bike mechanic I know said empty the tank use super unleaded, as he heard a lot of people were having problems, is it worth it? Do bikes really need super unleaded? What’s your thoughts, experience
JP
My thoughts are simple.
We are being ripped off my bikes will run on it but not good mpg

If it's newer than 2012 it should be ok, if it's an older classic then as little ethanol as possible, there is a big difference in mpg between e5 and E10, on my little yam sr400 it's about 12 mpg as E10 does not have the calorific value so you need more to keep the same performance

Mine is 2006 so not a classic but older than 2016 bikes they were testing it on, mine’s also carbs not efi

There are kits you can buy to take the ethanol out of modern fuel, but you need something to bring the octane rating back, classic oils at the Bicester heratige centre in Oxfordshire do sell them.

My bike is 2019 but I'm using E5, only partly because we fill both bikes together (and Danny's is 2008); I just don't want to risk it. I'm averaging 63.5mpg on E5.

My bike is a 2019 and I have run it on E10 for about 1500 miles (since the prices got stupid) with no noticeable deterioration in mpg or performance.. In fact the bike hasn't skipped a beat... The rider on the other hand...... 🙄
Steve_H
My bikes all run on E10 ok, but I use the good stuff every 4th fill.
If the bikes not going to used for a while fill up with ultra fuel, Esso if you can cos that has no ethanol, most the others are E5.
Strom67
I didn't know Esso Ultra was 0% ethanol, cheers for that Steve 👍

I run the diversion on sta-bil performance additive, its from the states and is available over here, they use it in snowmobiles, I find helps with ethanol additives, a bit like redex but better.
Steve_H
Ethanol of course is hygroscopic. Does this mean we should be sticking a shot of meths in the tank like wot used to do in the olden days?
Anyone out with a bit of chemistry knowledge that can tell me if I'm talking bollox?

Update on my poor misfiring cbf I changed the plugs looks like they’d had been in a while, put some esso high grade petrol in, first station I got to on my travels, when I needed fuel, eventually the e10 got burned off, now my bike is back to normal. No more e10 shit ever again, if your bike is older than 2016 which apparently is the year of the bike they wer testing it on don’t fkn use it.
Malc1
PS I use my bike almost every day rain or shine so a badly performing bike is really not what I need, not bothered about mpg never have been. But missing & running rough I am so e10 is off the shopping list
Ragnar
It sounds more like your plugs was the problem because all Honda motorcycles and mopeds produced for the EU market since 1993 can use ethanol-blended gasoline up to 10% although carburettor-equipped models could experience poor driveability in cold weather conditions.
And that's from Honda's own website.

I use Palladium tipped plugs on my BMW...and with good fuel, it will pull like a train from 25mph in 6th gear...however with E10 fuel it needs 4th gear. With E5, which is all you can get north of the border, it will still pull hard under 30mph in 6th. Fuel consumption is down by around 10% on E10 compared to E5 and now I only run E5
However, I have just had to scrap my last Renault Scenic, since it consistently returned 20% less mileage on E10 than it did on E5. And my SmartCar is also 12% down on E10 compared to E5 petrol. It's not just me... the government claim it's only 2.3% difference, but they don't tell you that this figure is for new cars designed for biofuels. The actual figure, across the board, is 11.3%...and since this figure is affected by the inclusion of all the newer cars which averaged 2.3%, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that there are lot of vehicles matching my 20% loss.
Also the lawnmowers don't like E10...hard to start, and stink when you hot start them.
I found and signed the petition on change.org to ban E10...

So did I nosmo but with mag but they won’t listen, I hate government & what they decide for me, it should be voted by the people if we want it. So much has been decided for us in history. Ahh now its getting political, didn’t wanna do that.

I have got to use E5 as my bikes range from a 1972 DT3 to a 1994 FZR600R.
I always used Super Unleaded in my DT3 Enduro as it's a 2 stroke.
A workmate with a Chinese MG car , nearly new got far better MPG with E5. E10 fuel is an expensive con. I'm now worried about riding a distance in case I can't get E5!
Ragnar
I done a little experiment last week on my SH300 and my MPG didn't change but it cost me a extra 93p to fill up my scooter with super unleaded
Strom67
E10 doesn't make any difference in my car, in fact my mpg has improved fractionally although I may be driving more slowly 🤣🤣🤣
In my V Strom E10 seems to make no difference.. Its my right wrist that has the biggest influence on mpg🤔
Steve_H
Out on the Tenere 1200 yesterday I managed to get 78.9mpg on regular E10.
That was however bimbling at 40mph, along 15 miles of gently undulating country roads in Westmoreland, zero traffic, admiring the views and waving at the shoops.
Once back to normal riding behaviour returned to my usual 56mpg.
Ti's a handy thing to know should I ever be desperately short of fuel or funds.
