from my house to vmaxdegs  its 14 miles   but from vmaxdegs to mine its 9 miles   how do you work that one out ? is it something to do with the camber of the road ? or how many right turns at islands ?   Actually we have both clocked it and it is 16 miles ............ which ever way you go.   Has anyone else noticed a discrepancy ?   or how do you lose 5 miles ? with the price pf petrol could be a useful tip.

hmmmmm.  Damn.   Let me figure it out.  But for info the distance is calculated in a straight line

You sure its saying that?   I've checked the 2 postcodes you have, and they're pretty similar results (Allowing for a 10% error at either side due to the shape of the earth - makes it difficult to calculate).   Here's my results for you....   The distance between these 2 postcodes is precisely 14.23317361 miles (To 8 decimal places). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The latitude distance between them is 13.26450232 miles (To 8 decimal places). The longitude distance between them is 5.16102795 miles (To 8 decimal places). Pythagorus theory (SquareRt of: X*X + Y*Y) is applied to find the distance... SquareRt ( (5.2x5.2) + (13.3x13.3) ) = 14.23317361 miles.     The distance in reverse between these 2 postcodes is precisely 14.69078673 miles (To 8 decimal places). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The latitude distance between them is -13.26450232 miles (To 8 decimal places). The longitude distance between them is -6.31444321 miles (To 8 decimal places). Pythagorus theory (SquareRt of: X*X + Y*Y) is applied to find the distance... SquareRt ( (-6.3x-6.3) + (-13.3x-13.3) ) = 14.69078673 miles.

hmmmm longitude distance is quite well out, tho it doesnt affect the result so much.   The longitude is difficult to calculate, because its different distances (per one unit of messurement) at each point of the earth (Oval shape)

Aww bless Matt, you and your calculations, you're just a frustrated MATThematician aint ya LOL

Check out how difficult it is just to calculate the earths radius... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_radius   Nevermind calculate the distance between to units of messurement on that radius :-)   Took me about 2 months writing the script that got within 1% accuracy.  It's so complex that I wrote a full essay about it for college at the time.

Basicly you're saying it 14 miles Matt?LOL I've noticed that on some profiles, say for instance, someone from Birmingham,it could say that they are closer to me than someone from Cambridge is Confused Its fairly simple really,we can all tell the mileage calculator doesnt work very well & thats not a fault of  the sites, commonsense should tell people to question it.     p.s I've seen another site with a far worse calculator,Paris from Cambridge 4 miles!!!!???? lol

hmmm, forget everything i just said (The results).  My calculations may be wrong. Well, the calculations in my script are accurate (The methodolgy of calculating it) but the way I've implemented it is wrong.  I've changed the value of a variable that I shouldn't have.  Dammit.

DAMN!  It's the cosine thing.   I work the longitude value out using the earth's radius.  Simplified to cosinge(Postcode1's latitude value).   BUT - its not accurate enough.

Hmm ok, changed something which might fix it.  It's actually 13 miles!   LONGdifMile = LONGdifUnit * 2 * (4*Atn(1)) * cos(Postcode1_LAT) * 3956.545 /360   Changed to...  LONGdifMile = (sin(LATdifUnit/2))^2 + cos(Postcode1_LAT) * cos(Postcode2_LAT) * (sin(LONGdifUnit/2))^2

When i rode to the Isle of Wight I did 10 miles more than someone else riding with me. I did 167 miles they did 157 was it because i rode slower so took longer to do them and he rode fast so his speedo struggled to record them all. Shocked

ok ok, think I've fixed it.   Not implementing it everywhere just yet, but I'm testing it on the QUICK search page (Not the full search!).   Go to www.bikermatch.co.uk (Homepage) And use the form there.  Let me know if it works or not.   It's now accurate to 0.01%!!!
